James Robinson is a comic and screenplay writer from Great Britain. He has lived in the U.S since 1989 where he began working in comics initially for DC and Dark Horse Comics. Among his more known and regarded works are Grendel Tales: Four Devils, One Hell, sundry Legends of the Dark Knight arcs, Superman, Justice League of America and Earth 2. He is perhaps most well known for his award winning runs on both Starman and Leave It To Chance.
We had a few questions for Robinson, and he graciously agreed to an email interview before Comic Con Honolulu.
Who most influenced your work?
Archie Goodwin, Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Will Eisner. Outside of comics — Tom Waits, Raymond Chandler, Robert Louis Stevenson.
What was the inspiration for Starman?
Hmm. I know the lyrics and feel of Tom Waits inspired me. Plus the work of Miller/Mazzucchelli.
Have you ever eaten a SPAM musubi? Would you be willing to try one?
I have had SPAM musubi. I love it. I would love to have more. I like my SPAM crispy.
What charity do you support?
Best Friends Animal Charity.
What is the best advice you received in your career?
Be nice to people on your way up, because you’ll meet them again on your way down.
What is something you are extremely passionate about?
Apart from my work, I’m passionate about music.
