Colin‘s theatrical debut was at the Cambridge Arts Theatre in Plaintiff in a Pretty Hat then The Other House at the Mermaid Theatre in London. Repertory seasons followed at Guildford, Liverpool, Canterbury, Harrogate and The Chichester Festival.
In the West End, he has appeared in The Price of Justice, Traitors, Run for your Wife, and ‘Corpse!’ Colin has toured in Private Lives, Born in the Gardens, Privates on Parade, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, Death and the Maiden, Why Me?, Flarepath, as the entire d’Ascoyne family in Kind Hearts and Coronets, as Van Helsing in Dracula, also Strangers on a Train, Bedroom Farce, She Stoops to Conquer and the National Theatre production of Noises Off.
He played Magwitch in the musical Great Expectations and Sir Joseph Porter KCB in HMS Pinafore for Carl Rosa Opera Company. He recently toured in two world premieres, House of Ghosts playing Inspector Morse and The Final Test by Chris Paling.
His 33 pantomime roles have been as diverse as Dick (Whittington), Buttons, Captain Hook and Widow Twankey.
Credits as a director include The Oz Trials at Liverpool Playhouse, The Mousetrap in Stockholm (in English!) and Bazaar and Rummage at The Duke of Cambridge.
Colin’s television career, commencing with Sartre’s Roads to Freedom, includes Cousin Bette, War and Peace, The Edwardians, The Citadel, Swallows and Amazons Forever, The Famous Five, Jonathan Creek, A Dance to the Music of Time, The Bill, Casualty, Dangerfield, Sunburn, The Knock, The Waiting Time, Kingdom, Hustle and Doctors. In 2012 he was seen in the jungle in I’m a Celebrity… and last year played a guest role in Star Trek Continues available online.
He is however principally known for two very contrasting roles – as the scheming and universally loathed Paul Merroney in The Brothers back in the 70’s and as the sixth incarnation of the universally loved Doctor in Doctor Who, a role he continues to play in the popular Dr. Who audio-drama series for Big Finish Productions. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who Colin, Sylvester McCoy and Peter Davison appeared in the widely acclaimed celebratory short The Five(ish) Doctors.
Films include Dangerous Davies, The Airzone Solution, The Zero Imperative, The Harpist, Soul’s Ark, The Asylum and Les Trois Mousquetaires. He recently completed work on a short film Time and Again.
For the last 22 years he has written a weekly newspaper column for The Bucks Free Press, which have been published as anthologies – ‘Look Who’s Talking’ and ‘Second Thoughts’. The third volume Sixth Sense was published this year. He is also the author of ‘Gallimaufry’ a collection of short stories.
